Torajan Funeral Ceremony

On a hot afternoon in a dusty, dry field, many rows of water buffalo are standing together patiently in the sun. With his left hand holding the first buffalo in the row by a short rope and his right hand softly stroking its head, a young Torajan with a broad bladed knife tucked into his waistband prepares himself for the ritual slaughter. Hundreds of guests and villagers are milling around but the rowdy crowd suddenly goes completely quiet. No one moves. All eyes are on the young man stroking the buffalo’s head. With lightning speed he pulls the broad blade from its sheath and slices down across the water buffalo’s neck. A split second later blood spurts from the wound and the buffalo sinks to its knees and falls over.

I know why the caged bird sings

Several weeks ago,  I edited a black and white photograph, as displayed in this article. I took this photo at Pramuka’s bird market, Jakarta. The next step, as an artwork, worthy of the title. I suddenly remembered a poem, along with strong memories of noisy chirping birds.

Tak ada banyak orang Saya meluaskan pandangan , menatap dari kejauhan Story Bridge megah diatas sungai Brisbane. Betapa mempesona. Angin di musim semi yang begitu sejuk  masih terasa dingin bagi orang di daerah tropis seperti saya.

Baduy’s Honey Road

The Baduy (or Badui), who call themselves Kanekes, are a traditional community living in the western part of the Indonesian province of Banten, near Rangkasbitung. Their population of between 5,000 and 8,000 is centered in the Kendeng mountains at an elevation of 300-500 meters (975′-1,625′) above sea level. Their homeland in Banten, Java is contained in just 50 km² (20 sq. miles) of hilly fores.


Members of the Baduy tribe safeguard their traditional ways of life by resisting any form of modernity. They obey the entire set of custom, including traditional prohibitions.
